Learn Shakuhachi

SHAKUHACHI LESSONS

I teach shakuhachi on site in Berlin or online.

The shakuhachi is not an easy instrument to learn. It takes consistent dedication to play it well.

As the shakuhachi is an extremely sensitive instrument, it reflects the inner state of the player. Physical and emotional tensions are transferred to the sound. The shakuhachi therefore reveals what is going on inside us. Anyone who wants to play the shakuhachi seriously will therefore have to face their own truth sooner or later.

In my lessons, I therefore not only emphasize musical and technical skill, but also aspects of mindfulness, self-connection and an attitude towards the practice and, by extension, life.

STYLE AND LINEAGE

I am a licensed Jun Shihan (Junior Instructor) under Shakuhachi Grandmaster Shawn Tairyu Head. He is a student of Michael Chikuzen Gould, who in turn learned from Katsuya Yokoyama and Yoshinobu Taniguchi.

Pieces from various shakuhachi schools are taught, including Kinko Ryu, Icchoken and Dokyoku Chikushinkai. The aim is for each student to develop their own voice. Therefore, my school is ultimately not about adapting the style of a particular school, but about developing a personal style that corresponds to the essence of the player.

This focus on authenticity and self-expression was significantly influenced by the legendary shakuhachi player and Zen monk Watazumi Doso Roshi.

RANKS AND REPERTOIRE

I teach following types of music:

Minyo - Japanese Folkmusic

Honkyoku - Traditional Shakuhachi Music

Sankyoku - Tranditional Japanese Ensemble Music

Contemporary Music

In order to complete the respective rank, all pieces must be completed to the satisfaction of the teacher. An additional 45-minute recital is required for the Okuden rank.

The Shoden Level teaches the basics of the shakuhachi, including breathing technique, tone formation, embouchure, pitch, Japanese notation, etc.
